about

The Sulphur Miner – Alan Lomax recorded a couple of different pieces called Surfarara (songs in the sulpur miners style) in the town of Sommatino, which is by coincidence very close to the town of Delia where Dominic Mancuso’s parents are from and where I have family also. The Sulphur mines were terrible places to work and this piece is a miner’s lament. The original recording is very haunting, and the singer’s thick dialect and unusual note choices really make it seem like it’s from somewhere else, and I’ve tried to follow the text with some new music that shares those qualities.
