Our version makes reference to the island of Jamaica as much as Sicily, but this tune actually comes from one of the Lomax recordings done in Modica, which is the city my parents lived in. The singer on the Lomax recording Luigino Scollo was actually still performing until the 1980s and my relatives all knew him because he sang in front of the church at Christmas time (Nnuena translates to Novina, and it’s a Christmas Carol). My brother Roberto has traveled to Sicily much more often than I have, and by coincidence he met Luigino many years ago as well, long before he heard him on the Lomax recordings.
