Cantu ri li scugghitura

from The Sicilian Jazz Project by The Sicilian Jazz Project

/

about

This is a wheat harvesting song that also comes from La Contea Di Modica, and the group's accordion player Gino Carbonaro told me that it’s a typical donkey cart driver's tune that has been adapted with a very old text. In Sicily, peasants would be granted access to wheat fields that had already been harvested, and their job would be to collect whatever grain had fallen to the ground. For the opening vocal section we stay fairly true to the piece but then I tried to rework it both rhythmically and harmonically into a structure better suited to jazz improvising.
I think this is the first song Dominic ever learned for the Sicilian Jazz Project, but he’s been doing his own explorations of Sicilian music for a number of years. Once I’d heard him sing this tune I knew I’d have to keep him in the group.
